Products are made up of materials, and those materials are valuable, so by saving and reusing material, we can save money. That means we can afford to use natural organic materials, renewable energy and sustainable packaging. Instead of giving in, we designed our own tech to create these efficiencies so we could then invest in making our t-shirts sustainable. As for how we do that, let’s head to the field…

How is organic cotton made?

All our clothes are made from organic cotton, and they are GOTS certified. Cotton has been grown in India since 5000 BCE - and for good reason. It’s natural, durable, absorbent (which means it’s easy to dye), and most importantly, comfortable. One of the largest issues in cotton production is the amount of water it requires to grow - that’s why our organic cotton is grown in the north of India, where monsoons fill reservoirs that supply the water needed, without irrigation.

Organic cotton is grown without the harmful chemicals that are in most pesticides and fertilisers. Instead, our farmers use natural fertilisers like cow poo. Then, when the cotton seeds are separated from the usable part of the fibre, those seeds are pressed and used to feed cows who can then turn it into natural fertiliser! A circle within our circular supply chain.

Yet, circularity isn’t the answer on its own. A circle of plastic is still... Well, plastic. That exists, actually - it’s called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Even within a circular supply chain, clothing should be plastic-free. We’ve made sure that every part of our products is made from plant-based materials, from the cotton grown in our fields to the parcel that arrives at a customer’s door.

So much of our thinking is linear, that it’s difficult to tell the story of a circular supply chain. We’re used to stories having a beginning, a middle and an end. In a closed-loop supply chain, there is no end. So where should we go next? We have to pick somewhere so we’ll go from the place closest, at our UK t-shirt printing factory.

In the traditional linear economy of the fashion industry, clothes are produced speculatively, before any orders have been placed. That ends up in 40% of all clothing being created and thrown away without ever being used. By using print-on-demand technology, we can reduce that waste down to zero. And the cool thing about digitising the printing process is that software can be programmed to repeat the same actions every time, leading to consistent results. It’s like using copy-paste, but on clothes.

So in a circular economy, products are designed from the start to be remade. That means materials flow back to the maker and the new product is made from the old product. It is different from recycling, or upcycling, where the material is turned into something different before it is then thrown away. A circular economy is infinite because by design the material flows in a loop, and all you need to do when you have finished with your Mytees T-shirt is, send it back to us, and we will cover the cost of that so there is no costs to you the customer.

The principles of the circular economy

The circular economy advocates for sustainable production, reasoned consumption, efficient waste management, all while fighting for the well-being of individuals. This approach is based on several principles:

the preservation and optimization of natural resources;

Reducing the consumption of non-renewable resources;

achieving eco-design;

the development of the local economy;

putting an end to programmed obsolescence;

reducing the impact of human activity on the environment and on health;

limiting consumption, wastefulness, and the production of trash.

We also consider the fact that 60% of clothing is made from plastic, while Mytees products are made from natural materials. And once a month on every order we receive during our ‘One Tee One Tree’ offer weekends, we make a donation to Plastic Bank to fund the recovery of 1kg of ocean-bound plastic. This plastic is removed from polluted rivers and watercourses.

As well as reducing plastic, Mytees products are designed to be remade into new products when worn out. This means a massive reduction in waste. In the manufacturing process, it is normal for a small number of products to fail a quality assurance process and, when this happens, we reprocess that fabric to be remade into new products. Our customers can also send back any worn out Mytees items and we will remake them into new products. In the future, we hope to Remill organic cotton from other brands too, but at the moment we can only Remill our own products.

Every remilled product means one less item that needs to be made from scratch. We can take the benchmark water and carbon impact of a raw cotton product and multiply that by 95% (5% of the fibre is lost during recycling) to see how much we have saved through remilling. This gives us a figure that quantifies the impact of the circular economy on climate change and the water cycle.

Approximately 7.23kg of CO2 and 4478 litres of water is saved per tee that has been remilled. Circularity is the way forward for conserving resources and taking care of our planet.

Remill - How clothes are recycled

Using quality materials and good clothing design means the life of clothes can be extended. With the current linear economy, clothes are worn less than 10 times before being thrown away, and then all the materials, energy and manpower that went into making them are wasted. We needed a solution that would allow us to reuse all that, so that new clothing can be made from the old.

We design each of our products from the start, so that they can be sent back when they’re worn out and remade into new clothing. We call this process ‘Remill’. Remill means that our products can be designed, sold and worn, then sent back, remade and re-printed, and re-used… forever.

When products arrive back at our factory, we separate them according to colour, and turn them back into yarn. The yarn from old products is turned into new fabric, which is then cut and sewn into a new product, ready to be printed. This allows us to make recycled products that are still just as vibrant and soft as virgin cotton. If you look closely at a Remilled product, you can actually see the mix of yarns that give the colour such a unique depth.

And so the circle is complete and the journey starts all over again. The end is the start. Or the start is the end. Because what do you call a customer, when they also become your supplier? When products are sent back to us and the material is reused, we are integrating the customer into the supply chain and the circular manufacturing process.

We might have some terminology to work out, but what we have shown is that a circular economy is not only possible, it is financially beneficial to both companies and customers. When clothes are designed from the start to be circular, we can use fewer toxic chemicals, create less waste, be more productive and redirect our money into what counts: sustainability.

How Sustainable Fashion Helps Reduce Plastic Pollution Introduction The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters on the planet, with fast fashion accelerating the environmental crisis through excessive resource consumption and plastic waste.
